Shoto

Funakoshi Gichin pen name when he wrote poetry, derived from either:

1. Pine Waves, thought to refer to the trees under which he wrote.
2. Tiger's Tail, the name of a hill in Okinawa near where Funakoshi lived.

One group of his Tokyo students took his nick name as the name of their first purpose-built dojo, which then became the name of the karate style, Shotokan.
